:icondrowtfs: gave an ample comment that better explains the phenomenon, and much more. So please take time to read it.

"to be very honest, in the beginning it looked like they were unemployed people queueing up for something like applying for some state-sponsored jobs or queueing up for unemployment allowance or something like that.
Anyway, I certainly know what you are talking about. My feeling is that this is unfortunately inescapable, and the game of politics is always this one: manipulation of masses, where the players try to give populations whatever reason they need (wine, for example) to give them what they want from them (the power). And in order to get elected, a leader will even have to transform himself into different things for different people.
Personally, I just don't believe in a truly conscious and independent population at large. Maybe because a big part of people just doesn't want to be conscious or maybe because populations are so insanely large in today's world and they become so isolated and lack any sense of community at all. Sometimes, the only direct leadership a lot of people have end up being the television in their living room or a face in printed media, and no one ever looks into their eyes to make a direct connection to them in everyday life. It's really like they are hipnotized and the only thing that matters is what happens on TV, and any interactions people have seem to be in some unimportant corner of the world and they themselves don't believe their lives are really as important as the things they see on TV, so they have a hard time believing that they have a voice that counts. That way, people forget what leadership is and start treating it as ordinary consumption, hence the wine distribution for added value over the opposing candidates. That's why a lot of people seem to think that politics is something you can like or not like, instead of something that's necessarily a part of life for anyone who lives in society.
If these leaders were in it because they have a powerful wish to see their country be a better place for its population, it wouldn't matter that populations voted for them because they offered a picnic, what matters is that they elected a good leader. But the problem is that most of the time these people are just career politicians.
So what we really need is for people that care about things to not feel alienated or intimidated by the filthy corrupt political establishment that is in place in any given country, and move in and start taking political territory, cuz no change will happen if the people that have the vision don't make it happen. And that's the truly selfless leader, you take a population that doesn't even deserve it and you nurture them and care deeply about them, even though maybe they just accepted you because you gave them free wine.
That's not to say that your article is unimportant, certainly not. You do your share by documenting and writing about it, giving voice to people that have it in them but don't think it is a welcome thing to say. How many people in the world know what's wrong with it but don't want to disrupt the status quo? Too many... And they depend on other people speaking for them, so they can join in the choir.
Thanks for the article and for inspiring some thoughts, it's great to see it.."

Getting out the voters is a difficult thing in any country.  Perhaps offering food and drink at our next election will get out more voters.  It's not good if food is connected to a particular candidate, but having that many people show up for any kind of vote would be great where I live.  Unfortunately, even though our citizens have almost too much information on each candidate, they don't believe their right to vote is worth showing up for.
